Arkansas Dental Hygiene Programs

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

The Dental Hygiene program is a full-time, day program with one cohort of 36 students beginning each fall semester. It consists of four fall/spring semesters with one intervening summer session.  The program’s mission, goals, and clinical competencies/learning outcomes can be found on the department website.

Successful completion of all program requirements qualifies the student to apply for state, regional, and national examinations required for licensure.  Successful completion of the program does not ensure licensure.

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene consists of 51 semester credits of prerequisite course work and 69 credits in the dental hygiene curriculum, for a total of 120 credits.

The 120-credit-hour curriculum combines general education, biomedical science, and dental science and dental hygiene courses culminating in a Bachelor of Science. Students participate in didactic, laboratory, and clinical education experiences. Successful completion of the program prepares the graduate for the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination and the regional clinical examination. Successful completion of the written and clinical board is required for licensure in your selected state of practice.

UAFS also offers an Online Degree Completion program. This program is specifically designed for dental hygienists with an associate degree who desire to advance their education toward a baccalaureate degree. The fully online A.A.S. to B.S. completer provides enhanced theoretical and clinical knowledge to promote career advancement or the option to move into a new field related to dental hygiene, pursue a master's degree, or strengthen professional skills in communication and evidence-base practice.
